A potential analysis is a comparison of company performance with the given expectations for said company. In logistics, it is also known as a logistics audit and is used as a future-oriented, strategic planning tool. Processes and structures of the actual state are checked and compared with the target state. Weak points can thus be identified, rectified and adapted to new structures.
The general goalsof the potential analysis are
- Identification of possible potential fields that achieve the greatest optimization effects
- Visibility of weak points in fields of potential growth
- Identification of possible scopes of action
Optimization potential in the field of logisticscould lie, for example, in the use of freight forwarders and service providers or, with regard to intralogistics, in the use of certain logistics centers or distribution centers.
In detail such an analysis contains a requirement analysis, a performance analysis, a process analysis, a structural analysis and a benchmarking. This ultimately results in a strength-weakness profile, which in turn reveals the opportunities and risks for a company. For this reason, the term “SWOT analysis” (Strengths–Weaknesses–Opportunities–Threats) is often used.
The steps of a potential analysis
The individual work steps include the points
- Analysis,
- Definition of goals,
- Strategy development,
- and strategy implementation.
The preparation of a potential analysis by a competent consulting team is definitely worthwhile. The effort for the implementation is comparatively low with regard to the use of possible potentials in terms of cost reduction. Achieved cost savings and performance improvements are usually the result. In this way, logistics objectives can be expanded and competitiveness improved.
