The linear sorter, or shoe sorter, is an automated sorting and distribution system on which the goods are transported and distributed to their designated stations by a sliding mechanism.
This sorting and distribution method is a continuous material handling system. The inventory is therefore transported from A to B on an automatic, continuously running conveyor belt or similar system. In a large warehouse, however, there are more than just two stations to which the goods can be conveyed. Depending on the situation, different goods are divided among different storage areas to be stored or shipped.
Functionality of the linear sorter
The process is comparable to that of a large main road, where there are many different branch-offs. The conveyor belt always remains in motion and the individual goods turn into the branches assigned for them. The branches have different functions depending on the bearing. The goods are sorted by order, for example, for picking or delivery. In another case by type, if the products are stored. The system scans the inventory or measures the weight and/or dimensions of the respective goods before each branch and recognizes from this whether the inventory must turn at this branch or whether it continues to travel on the main conveyor belt. If the inventory is to be moved onto the branching conveyor belt, the push-off devices are extended. These are located between or above the rollers of the conveyor belt and thus have no influence on the conveyor belt when not in use. These are located between or above the rollers of the conveyor belt and thus have no influence on the conveyor belt when not deployed. After that the push-off -device, sometimes also referred to as shoes, retract and the inventory is on its intended path. During this process, the entire sorting and distribution system does not have to be stopped.
Due to its design, the linear sorter is suitable for goods with smooth surfaces (cartons or containers) and has a speed of approximately 3m/s. In addition to the linear sorter, there are other types of sorting and distribution systems, such as rotary sorters, tilt switch sorters, and drop flap sorters.
